What does it take for a nonprofit to move from surviving to thriving? What kind of support can funders provide to meaningfully shift the trajectory of an organization? To most effectively deploy the right types of grants (capacity, operating, and infusions of capital – alongside project and program grants), funders must understand the intersection of strategy, financial health, and the needs of the whole enterprise when crafting grants.

In this session just for grantmakers, we will discuss approaches to leveraging the right kinds of grants at the right times to create platforms for increasing grantee capacity to deliver well on mission and strategy.

Participants will learn to:

  • Engage grantees in conversations about their financial status and true needs
  • Identify signs of financial health and red flags that warrant further conversations with grantees
  • Understand the true cost of what it takes for a grantee to meet their mission objectives and how a grantee’s business model can inform the grantmaking approach
  • Sequence types of grants in such a way that the funder is contributing to the nonprofit’s financial, operational, and programmatic success
