The Donors Forum Education Group fall program promises to be a thought provoking event. Dr. Jim Applegate, Executive Director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), and Arnaldo Rivera, new Deputy Chief of Staff for Education for Mayor Rahm Emanuel, will present to the group.

Dr. Jim Applegate is the new Executive Director of IBHE.   Dr. Applegate will discuss the Illinois Public Agenda for College and Career Success, “a ten year plan to raise education levels, improve college affordability, create a 21st century workforce, and create a vibrant economy.” In his first few months in his role with the IBHE, Dr. Applegate has articulated a strong vision and brought a sense of enthusiasm to the education landscape. Dr. Applegate was previously VP for Strategic Impact at the Lumina Foundation for Education, and prior to that held faculty and administrative leadership positions throughout the state of Kentucky.

Arnaldo Rivera is the new Deputy Chief of Staff for Education for Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Arnie succeeds Beth Swanson in the Mayor’s Office having most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer at the Chicago Public Education Fund. Previously, Rivera worked in a variety of capacities at CPS over about a decade and began his career as a classroom teacher. In his new role in the Mayor’s office, Rivera will be responsible for defining and leading the education policy agenda for the City of Chicago, from birth through college (early childhood, K-12, and City Colleges). He will be instrumental in citywide initiatives like Thrive, in which many Donors Forum members are also engaged.
