We know we need to evaluate our programs. But should we evaluate the process, or the product? And how do we choose from the many available evaluation tools and methods? In this intermediate-level workshop, you’ll gain a greater understanding of evaluation practices that focus on process and outcome, and we’ll take a look at evaluation coaching as a tool for creating a culture of learning in your organization. Through small group consulting and guided reflection, you’ll also explore how each evaluation approach might apply to your work and identify next steps for creating, adjusting, or implementing your evaluation plan.

Tania Rempert, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of Planning, Implementation and Evaluation Org. Recognized as a dynamic facilitator and leader in evaluation coaching, Dr. Rempert is at the forefront of helping organizations gather, understand and use their own research data to build organizational capacity. With Dr. Rempert’s expert guidance, government agencies, universities, school districts, non-profits and museums of all sizes have become better equipped to fulfil their missions, using their own in-house resources. Since 2001, Dr. Rempert has evaluated a wide-variety of social and educational programs, working on evaluations for over 50 different non-profit agencies, each with several community stakeholders from additional organizations involved in the process as well.  Dr. Rempert aims to help non-profit staff members internalize the benefits of evaluation in general and the benefits of the particular measures and outcomes required by the funder.  In this way, she has strived to make large-scale external evaluations meaningful at the ground level. Her evaluation expertise includes quasi-experimental design, mixed-methods research, and evaluation utilization.  Dr. Rempert received a B.S. in Community Health Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She earned her Master’s Degree at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration and completed her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, Evaluation from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Kim Silver, Principal, The Silver Line, is an entrepreneurial social sector professional with more than 15 years of experience leading and managing nonprofits, foundations, government agencies and consulting engagements. She has an extensive background assessing social impact, designing feasibility studies and creating new services, programs and partnerships.  Working on all sides of the social sector, including nonprofits, foundations and government entities, Kim has honed her strategy and management skills. Prior to founding The Silver Line, Kim was a Director and founding team member with Mission Measurement, a strategy and measurement consulting firm. Kim led the nonprofit and foundation practice team and worked with national nonprofit organizations and funders to measure and improve their social impact. Prior to Mission Measurement, Kim served as the Director of Client Services for Grenzebach Glier and Associates, worked as a Program Development Specialist with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in partnership with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and served as a Program Officer with El Pomar Foundation, the second largest foundation in Colorado. Kim graduated from Colorado College.   

Kelly Sparks, CEO of Maple Grove Objective, LLC, has over 15 years of experience in the education field and is a national expert and innovator in the areas of data usage, program management, and strategic planning. Kelly is responsible for overseeing all projects, ranging from pure research and data projects to strategic planning efforts. Previously, she held the position of Principal Researcher at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) where she led the college and career readiness group and served as the Director of the National Charter School Resource Center. As Principal Researcher, Kelly was responsible for all aspects of evaluation design and oversight of large-scale evaluation projects. Prior to AIR, Kelly was the Research Director at the Chicago Public Schools responsible for tracking the postsecondary outcomes of students and analyzing the data to better understand the levers that impact postsecondary success. Her research and data team developed innovative approaches to connect school and central office administrators with actionable data to target their efforts and improve their outcomes. Kelly has a Master in Public Policy from the University of Chicago.
