Bridging the Divide Listening Series Final Report

To learn about and strengthen relationships between rural and urban communities in Illinois, Forefront convened a listening tour called “Bridging the Divide,” which we were delighted to have you take part. We're pleased to share with you the final report on our conversation series. The report explores culture, community needs and potential partnerships of each of the three Central Illinois communities represented in the dialogue.

Assessing the Data and Information Needs of Chicago-Area Arts Organizations

This report describes the needs for data among arts organizations and the priorities that funders may have in the area of arts-related data. The report is based on interviews with arts organizations and experts primarily in the Chicago area, and on discussions held at meetings of Chicago-area funders. The findings come from a modest sample, but they offer useful perspectives on how to provide arts organizations the data they need to achieve their goals. The research was supported by The Chicago Community Trust.

A Report on Chicago's College and Career Access, Persistence, and Success Landscape

Over the last decade, research from the University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research has provided a substantial understanding of the issues related to post-secondary access and success for students in the Chicago Public Schools. Despite this depth of knowledge about student outcomes, there is limited understanding of the resources in Chicago that support students' college access, persistence, and success.

Commitment to Full-Funding

Our statement on our commitment to full-cost funding represents over two years of dialogue and discussion at Donors Forum about the importance of funding overhead costs of nonprofit organizations. Working in Illinois, with foundation and nonprofit leaders, and with others in the field nationally, we are collectively trying to shift the focus away from arbitrary limits on overhead and other organizational expenses in order to focus on measures of nonprofit effectiveness such as outcomes and impact.

Grant Accountability and Transparency Act (HB 2747)

This legislation will overhaul how the state administers its grant dollars and is an effort to consolidate, improve, and make more transparent the State of Illinois’ grantmaking activities. Understanding Foundation Expenses - Focus on Illinois

Policy discussions about grantmaking foundations often focus on how much they spend on administrative activities relative to their giving. Yet often missing in these discussions is an understanding of the nature and range of foundations' operating and administrative costs and what drives them. This publication provides a more informed perspective on this issue, defining and delineating charitable (program-related) administrative and operating expenses, which are those that count toward a foundation's payout requirement.

Illinois Nonprofit Employment Update

New data on employment trends among nonprofit organizations in Illinois point to two key findings:

  • With nearly 517,600 workers -- or one out of every nine private jobs in the state -- the nonprofit sector is a major jobs engine in Illinois, and one that has been growing in recent years.
  • Nonprofit organizations are facing increased pressure from for-profit organizations in the fields in which they operate.
