Cultivating Strong and Vibrant Arab American Communities

April 19, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am

Free

Join the UIC Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, along with Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP) Chicago, The Field Foundation, Lloyd A. Fry Foundation, and Forefront to explore the findings of a report on the state of racial justice for Arab Americans in the Chicagoland area.

Through demographic research, surveys, focus group data, and expert commentaries by organizers and academics, the report analyzes the effects of systemic inequities and anti-Arab/anti-Muslim racism on the lives of Arab Americans in employment, education, health care, housing, and policing.

We’ll hear from report authors and community-based organizations about the diversity of experiences among Arab American communities and their common challenges in navigating being at once hyper visible as a result of stereotypes and invisible due to being classified as white by government agencies and a general lack of knowledge about Arab Americans in our society.

Speakers include:

Amanda E. Lewis, UIC’s Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy

Nadine Naber, UIC’s Global Asian Studies & Gender and Women’s Studies

Muhammad Sankari, Arab American Action Network

Itedal Shalabi, Arab American Family Services (AAFS)
