Statement on Presidential Memorandum Targeting NPOs

May 5, 2026

Forefront unequivocally condemns all forms of political violence. We simultaneously stand in firm support of nonprofits’ and philanthropic grantmakers’ first amendment rights to fulfill their missions without fear, harassment, or retribution, regardless of who is in power.

The federal government’s recent targeting of charitable foundations and nonprofits is an overt attempt to silence their freedom of speech and freedom to give in ways that align with their values. We condemn the administration’s attempts to mischaracterize our sector’s work or restrict our fundamental freedoms.

Attempts to silence speech, distort or discredit charitable work, or limit the freedom to give not only weaken our democracy, they endanger our sector and the communities we serve. Irresponsible accusations create fear among staff, discourage volunteers, and undermine donor confidence. Most importantly, they threaten the continuity of services that millions of Illinoisans rely on, from after-school programs to emergency food assistance.

Charitable foundations and nonprofits provide resources and funding to an array of causes and issues in every part of our state. In times of need, charitable foundations and nonprofits step in. From veterans to school children, hospitals to libraries, churches to food kitchens, and artists to researchers, charitable foundations and nonprofits serve rural, suburban, and urban communities in every county in Illinois.

We support our neighbors when they are in need and remain committed to uniting across divides and partisanship. Charitable organizations exist to bring people together, not drive them apart. Forefront stands with our sector in supporting charitable foundations’ and nonprofits’ ability to continue the work they have always been engaged in and strongly oppose efforts to restrict their right to speech and to give in ways that align with their values and mission.
